All Protein Powders Are Not Created Equal

The word “denatured” describes a biochemical process in which proteins suffer a loss of structure. Unfortunately, this happens all too often in the supplement industry thanks to heat, chemical or other external stressors. When we talk about “denatured whey“, it means that the structure of the amino acids has been broken down by:

  • The exposure of the whey protein to high heat, chemicals or acids during processing

  • Oxidation of the amino acids

  • Agitating or spinning during the filtration and packaging processes

Essentially, all of these things lead to a breakdown of the vital amino acids that make whey protein so beneficial. The amino acids are still present, but your body cannot utilize them as efficiently as it could if they were in their natural, non-denatured state. A label may claim you’re getting 20 grams of protein… but are you, really? Some studies vary with the actual % in net amino acid utilization in denatured proteins but they are all consistently saying the same thing… there IS a loss. Some studies have shown up to an 80% net loss in bioavailability. So, instead of getting 20 grams in your high-heat processed powder… you’re really only getting 4 grams! That’s a scary thought.

With non-denatured whey protein powder you’re getting:

  • Enhanced muscle-building thanks to the easily digestible and bioavailable amino acids.

  • All 9 amino acids needed for growth and development.

  • All 20 essential & non-essential amino acids as a complete protein source.

  • Increases in muscular strength and size.

  • A boost in overall energy and health levels.

Compromised amino acids aren’t the only reason you should invest in a high quality, cold-processed protein powder. Non-denatured whey protein powder also contains high levels of cysteine in a form that is still bioactive. The cellular structures of the amino acids have NOT been altered during the processing, so you still get the glutathione-producing cysteines that your body needs to boost your immune system. Glutathione is the most powerful anti-oxidant, anti-aging compound on the planet! It’s important to keep this antioxidant running through you to aid in boosting immunity and fighting off disease and infections.

What about all of the other compounds and constituents that make up a quality protein? What happens to these things when they are sourced and processed poorly? Whey protein for example, is loaded with beta-lactoglobulin, alpha-lactalbumin, lactoferrin, and immunoglobulins – all of which can be rendered useless when the protein is denatured. These substances can benefit you in a number of ways, improving your immune function, your cardiovascular health, your response to exercise and even your hormonal levels. Depending on where the protein comes from, it may be bundled with micronutrients that you could use but aren’t getting enough of because of over-processing. Plant-based protein powders, for instance, often contain phytochemicals and other substances produced by that unique plant that could work as powerful antioxidants, support immune function, improve cardiovascular health or serve any number of other functions.

One more thing… there should NEVER be any signs of toxic heavy metals in a quality whey. And, because they aren’t added and aren’t supposed to be there, these substances won’t appear on an ingredients list. That doesn’t change the fact, however, that numerous studies have found high levels of cadmium, lead and arsenic. These highly toxic metals can make their way into whey protein supplements by means of poor processing practices for sure but are more commonly traced back to POLLUTED FARM LAND. Because it is cheaper and easier, whey is most commonly sourced from cows that are grown in polluted areas and kept in poor living conditions – increasing the risk of undesirable toxins showing up in the final product. Paint this picture in your own mind for a minute… Picture a bunch of cows free-ranging on the hills of New Zealand. These hills are extremely fertile due to the volcanic soils they carry and are home to 26 different indigenous plants that these lucky cows get to graze on all day every day. Picture sunshine, green rolling hills and happy cows! Now, contrast that image with highly commercialized farming practices where the cows are kept indoor most of the time in crowded pens, fed GMO feed and live this way all their lives. If you think the protein powders that come from these starkly contrasted images are the same… we can’t help you. THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE. The nutrient density and biochemical makeup of the grass-fed cows from New Zealand are superior. Period.

You know us, we promise to deliver the highest quality protein on planet earth. Yes, it’s also the best tasting and is super easy on your digestive system too… but that’s another story. With EVERY batch of CSE protein you get:
