All Protein Powders Are Not Created Equal

The word “denatured” describes a biochemical process in which proteins suffer a loss of structure. Unfortunately, this happens all too often in the supplement industry thanks to heat, chemical or other external stressors. When we talk about “denatured whey“, it means that the structure of the amino acids has been broken down by:

  • The exposure of the whey protein to high heat, chemicals or acids during processing

  • Oxidation of the amino acids

  • Agitating or spinning during the filtration and packaging processes

Essentially, all of these things lead to a breakdown of the vital amino acids that make whey protein so beneficial. The amino acids are still present, but your body cannot utilize them as efficiently as it could if they were in their natural, non-denatured state. A label may claim you’re getting 20 grams of protein… but are you, really? Some studies vary with the actual % in net amino acid utilization in denatured proteins but they are all consistently saying the same thing… there IS a loss. Some studies have shown up to an 80% net loss in bioavailability. So, instead of getting 20 grams in your high-heat processed powder… you’re really only getting 4 grams! That’s a scary thought.
